Different from Adult Dentistry

Our Approach

How we turn fear into fun.

Five proven techniques used at every paediatric visit — refined over 22+ years of caring for Delhi children.

1
Pre-visit

Parent Preparation

We send parents a simple guide on how to prepare your child — what to say (and avoid saying), books to read, and how to frame the visit positively. Sets the tone before anyone steps in.

2
Welcome

Calm, Familiar Environment

Child-friendly waiting area, friendly team trained in paediatric behaviour. You stay with your child throughout the visit — no separating, no surprises.

3
During treatment

Tell-Show-Do Technique

The proven paediatric method: tell the child what we'll do in simple terms, show the tool and how it works on their finger or doll, then do the procedure gently. Removes mystery and fear.

4
If needed

Gentle Sedation Options

For anxious children or longer procedures, we offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) — safe, effective and wears off in minutes. Oral sedation available under medical supervision when needed.

5
Reward

Positive Reinforcement

Stickers, badges, small toys and most importantly — genuine praise. Every successful visit reinforces that the dentist is friendly. By visit 2-3, most children become enthusiastic.

Age-by-Age Guide

Different ages, different care.

My daughter cried at every dentist for two years. After her first visit with Dr. Ameet, she asked when we were going back. He has a magic gift with children — and the technology to back it up. We've never gone anywhere else since.

Frequently Asked

Parent questions, answered.

Everything parents ask before their child's first visit.

When should my child first visit the dentist?
Children should have their first dental visit by age 1, or within 6 months of their first tooth erupting — whichever comes first. Both the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the Indian Society of Pedodontics recommend this early visit to establish a positive relationship with the dentist, monitor jaw development, identify habits like thumb-sucking early, and apply preventive care. At Ark Dental Global, first visits are gentle, short and parent-friendly.
How do I prepare my child for their first dental visit?
Keep it casual and positive. Avoid words like 'pain', 'hurt' or 'needle' before the visit. Frame it as an adventure: 'The dentist is going to count your teeth!' Read kid-friendly books about dental visits. Bring a favourite toy. Schedule appointments when your child is well-rested and not hungry. We use the proven 'Tell-Show-Do' approach — we explain each step in child-friendly language, show the tool, then perform the procedure gently.
What if my child is afraid or anxious?
Dental anxiety in children is completely normal. Our paediatric approach uses several techniques: 'Tell-Show-Do' to demystify procedures, positive reinforcement with rewards, parent presence during visits, distraction with ceiling visuals, and laughing gas (nitrous oxide) sedation when needed for anxious children. For more severe cases, deeper sedation options are available under careful supervision. Most children become comfortable after 2-3 successful visits.
Are baby teeth important if they fall out anyway?
Yes, baby teeth are critically important. They help children chew and speak properly, hold space for permanent teeth, guide jaw development and influence facial appearance. Decayed baby teeth can cause infections that damage developing permanent teeth, lead to speech problems, eating difficulties and bite issues later. Caring for baby teeth properly sets the foundation for a lifetime of oral health.
How can I prevent cavities in my child?
Six effective strategies: 1) Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste (rice-grain size for under 3, pea-sized for older), 2) Floss once their teeth touch, 3) Limit sugary drinks and snacks, 4) Never put baby to bed with a milk or juice bottle, 5) Schedule check-ups every 6 months for professional cleaning and fluoride application, 6) Consider dental sealants on permanent molars when they erupt (around age 6-7).
My child sucks their thumb. Is that a problem?
Thumb sucking is normal up to age 3-4 and usually stops on its own. After age 4-5, persistent thumb sucking can cause problems: open bite, narrow upper jaw, protruding upper front teeth, speech issues. We offer behavioural counselling and, if needed, gentle habit-breaking appliances. Early intervention with myofunctional therapy can correct underlying causes and prevent future orthodontic problems.
When should children consider braces or aligners?
Children should have an orthodontic screening by age 7, as recommended by the American Association of Orthodontists. Early intervention (interceptive orthodontics or myofunctional therapy) between ages 7-10 can correct developing issues before they require major treatment. Traditional braces or Invisalign Teen typically start between ages 11-14 once most permanent teeth have erupted. Dr. Mittu Dixit specialises in early intervention and Invisalign Teen.
What should I do if my child's tooth gets knocked out?
Act fast — the best chance of saving the tooth is within 30-60 minutes. For permanent teeth: 1) Find the tooth, handle by the crown only (never the root), 2) Rinse gently with milk or saline if dirty (no scrubbing), 3) Try to reinsert it into the socket immediately, 4) If not possible, store in milk or the child's saliva, 5) Call +91 99905 09300 immediately for emergency care. For baby teeth, do NOT reinsert — call us for guidance.
Do you offer sedation or laughing gas for nervous children?
Yes. We offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) for moderately anxious children — it's safe, effective and wears off within minutes after treatment. For more anxious children or longer procedures, we provide oral sedation under careful medical supervision. In rare cases requiring extensive work, we coordinate with paediatric anaesthesiologists for general anaesthesia in a hospital setting. All sedation is age-appropriate and supervised by our trained team.
Are dental X-rays safe for children?
Yes. Modern digital dental X-rays expose children to extremely low radiation — about the same as a few hours of natural background radiation from the sun. We use lead aprons, thyroid collars and digital sensors that reduce radiation by up to 90% compared to traditional film. X-rays are taken only when clinically necessary, never routinely for healthy mouths. The diagnostic value far outweighs the minimal risk.
