Wisdom tooth questions.
Does every wisdom tooth need to be removed?
No. A wisdom tooth that has come through fully, is healthy and can be cleaned can stay. Removal is advised when it is impacted, keeps getting infected, damages the tooth next to it or causes repeated pain.
Is wisdom tooth removal painful?
The area is numbed with local anaesthesia, so you feel pressure but not pain. Sedation is available for anxious patients. Soreness and swelling for 3 to 5 days afterwards is normal and managed with pain relief.
How long does wisdom tooth removal take?
A simple extraction can take 15 to 20 minutes. An impacted tooth that needs surgical removal usually takes 30 to 60 minutes.
How much does wisdom tooth removal cost?
The cost depends on whether the tooth is simple to remove or impacted and needs surgery. You get an exact quote after an examination and X-ray, before treatment.
How long is recovery?
Most people return to work in 1 to 3 days. Swelling peaks around day 2 or 3 and settles within a week. Stitches, if used, are usually removed or dissolve within 7 to 10 days.
Why do you sometimes need a 3D scan?
Lower wisdom teeth can sit close to the nerve that supplies feeling to the lip and chin. A CBCT scan shows the exact position so the removal can be planned safely.
